DMS Health Technologies unveils expanded portfolio and new go-to-market strategy
New name signals important changes for long-time industry leader

DMS Health Group today announced it is changing its name to DMS Health Technologies. While the name change may be slight - and perhaps barely noticeable even to those familiar with the 35-year-old enterprise - strategic additions in the company's portfolio and a new solutions-based approach to the U.S. healthcare market will provide important new benefits for customers and the patients they serve.

"Healthcare is undergoing incredible change. Economic pressures, demographic changes and legislative issues are creating some real challenges for our customers and the patients they serve," said Paul Wilson, CEO of DMS Health Technologies. "We believe, as a market leader, it's our responsibility to anticipate these changes and make sure our solutions portfolio and our approach to the market align with the challenges and give our customers the tools and the support they need to succeed.

"For the past few years, we've been making some important acquisitions and strategically expanding our portfolio of diagnostic imaging and patient monitoring solutions," Wilson said. "At the same time, we've been designing a sales and service model that is built around the true needs of our customers. We think our customers are going to like what they see."

Wilson said that after years of strategic acquisitions, senior leadership felt the time was right to consolidate the company's multiple product and divisional names and go to market under a single, unified power brand. "We've grown rapidly over the past several years by selectively acquiring a number of companies and product lines. Now that we are aligned under a truly unified solutions-based strategy, we felt the time was right to consolidate all of those company names and product brands under the DMS Health Technologies brand."

The new integrated DMS Health Technologies portfolio includes diagnostic imaging systems, new and reconditioned cardiac and patient monitoring systems and ultrasound, along with parts, supplies and accessories, and onsite service for most major brands of imaging equipment. The company is also a leading provider of mobile, interim and fixed site diagnostic imaging services, in addition to offering portable x-ray services in Minnesota.

"Ultimately, what is driving us is a commitment to continuous improvement in patient care," Wilson said. "We want to give our customers the technologies, services and support they need to provide quality care, whether they are in an urban or rural location, in a large or small facility or in an up or down economy. We know our customers take their jobs seriously. So do we. And we are doing everything we can to support them."

The energized DMS Health Technologies brand encompasses the former brands of DMS Health Group, DMS Imaging and DMS Interim Solutions.

DMS Imaging and Philips Healthcare Join Forces to Make a Difference in the Lives of Patients

On June 7, 2008, Columbus Regional Hospital of Columbus, Indiana, experienced an estimated $180M in damages when massive local flooding filled the hospital basement and part of the first floor became inundated. Many patients were evacuated on gurneys down stairwells by local emergency personnel and the National Guard as electricity to the facility was cut off and the elevator shafts were flooded.

The inside of Columbus Regional Hospital was a dark, muddy mess. "It's a scene out of a war movie. It's just unbelievable the amount of damage that much water can do; it was unrecognizable in the basement," said Jim Bickel, hospital CEO. "We know there is a lot of equipment down there that we're going to have to replace. The hospital and its emergency department are closed."

What happened next shows the true commitment and dedication from those who work to make a difference in the lives of patients. Philips Healthcare account executive, Jeff O'Dell, along with colleague Steve Rauh, regional sales manager, used the Philips ImageBridge program to contact Terry Teynor of DMS Imaging to help support the hospital. ImageBridge is a team collaboration where DMS Imaging fulfills interim solution needs to Philips' diagnostic imaging customers in times of disaster, renovation, patient backlog or equipment upgrades. Rauh contacted DMS Imaging to discuss the availability of CT (computed tomography) and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) mobile availability should the facility require immediate relief, asking "Do you have any ideas how we can approach this together?"

The ImageBridge team of Philips and DMS Imaging staff put into motion a well rehearsed drill to assist in determining the immediate needs of the facility and to coordinate with other participants including FEMA. Through ImageBridge, Teynor has worked with Philips on several natural disasters and was able to lend his first hand experiences to the local Philips team.

Within 24 hours, DMS/Philips ImageBridge responded to Philips and the leaders of Columbus Regional Hospital with a plan which included a Philips Brilliance 16 CT and a GE 1.5T Echo MRI. Both were ready to ship immediately.

O'Dell and Rauh worked with the hospital and local emergency teams to ensure that all of the recovery participants were in sync. Teynor states, "Enormous amounts of time were spent onsite with full time support by Jeff and Steve, along with the Philips field service engineers. Their personal dedication to their customer and community warrants recognition." Teynor is quick to point out that "Philips ImageBridge and the interim solutions division of DMS Imaging is a team effort, not an individual effort. ImageBridge is by definition a collaboration of efforts between Philips and DMS to provide mobile interim modalities to Philips customers in need."

Project implementation was provided by a number of DMS employees to ensure every last detail, including making certain drivers were identified, the site was ready and able to receive the equipment and trailers were ready to ship; spending several extra days on site working with the hospital, FEMA and Carolinas Med One to provide assistance anywhere possible; and ensuring systems would be delivered while well rehearsed internal processes were being followed by the team. Other DMS team members were able to locate and lease an ancillary building, which required electric, HVAC, water, plumbing and an ADA approved patient ramp, in less than 48 hours. This task required the two most experienced members of the interim solutions team.

The team had the CT on site as of 6:30am just ahead of Carolinas Med One's arrival of a mobile Emergency Department. The mobile MRI followed a few days later and integrated seamlessly into the entire complex, which now includes CT, MRI, mobile Emergency Department and a mobile temporary building for supply storage, physician reading areas and patient receiving and waiting rooms.

Kelly J. Londy, Philips Medical Systems Vice President, GM Computed Tomograhy and Nuclear Medicine Business Lines, Sales and Service Organization - North America sent the following email, which Teynor attributes to his whole team's dedication to making a difference in the lives of our customers and patients.

"First, I want to thank you for your prompt response to help us support Columbus Regional Hospital in this time of disaster. Your partnership with us and ability to provide a mobile in such short notice has made this situation much better for the customer and the patients in need. Thank you!"

The mission of DMS Imaging is to make a difference in the lives of their customers, patients and employees. The Philips ImageBridge program, started in 2005, allows for this mission to be realized by supporting facilities and patients in a time of need.

Rural ND/MN Hospitals Go Digital
New ally in the fight against breast cancer

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics demonstrate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her life. Now there’s a new ally in the fight against this prevalent disease. DMS Imaging, in partnership with rural hospitals throughout northeast North Dakota and Northwest Minnesota, is bringing full-field digital mammography to women across the region. “The mission of DMS Imaging is to make a difference in the lives of our patients. We believe all people, no matter where you live, deserve access to cutting-edge health services,” says Paul Wilson, CEO of DMS Health Group, the parent company of DMS Imaging. And now that technology is here for the early detection of breast cancer.

Beginning in April, hospitals in Fosston, Ada, Northwood, McVille, Cooperstown, Park River, Grafton, Cando, Devils Lake, Warren, Karlstad, Hallock, Cavalier and Langdon will begin offering digital mammography to their patients each week.

What is digital mammography?

Digital mammography uses computers and specially designed digital detectors to produce an image that can be displayed on a high-resolution computer monitor, and transmitted and stored just like computer files. The radiologist can view and manipulate the images and enhance visualization of the structures within the breast tissue. They can also adjust brightness and contrast, and zoom in on specific areas to help detect small calcifications, masses, and other changes that may be signs of early cancer.

From the patient’s point of view, a digital mammogram is like traditional film screen mammography. Both use x-ray to generate images of the breast. However, instead of using film to capture and record the image, a digital mammogram uses a special detector to capture and convert x-ray energy into a digital image. The resulting digital images are immediately available to the radiologist for diagnosis. Digital mammography takes less than half the time of traditional film-based exams as well as reduces the need for repeat exams due to under or over-exposure.

What does this mean for rural healthcare?

Through shared service pooling, DMS Imaging is able to bring digital mammography to the rural communities, where even larger facilities cannot afford it within their walls. The concept of this shared model incorporates economic resources of many facilities, in order to provide cutting-edge medical services to the people in their communities.

“Through shared services, our digital mammography unit will travel on a set schedule based on the frequency and length of time agreed upon between DMS and each individual facility,” says Nathan Roesler, Regional Vice President for DMS Imaging. “This gives rural facilities the ability to provide its patients with the highest quality care, without having to invest in the purchase of capital equipment. They likely don’t have the patient load to justify having the service available every day, but having the service one or two days a week means their patients don’t have to travel to a facility in a larger community that has the technology available. It’s a win-win for the patient and the facility.”

DMS Imaging provides mobile, portable, interim and fixed-site diagnostic imaging services across the United States. "As time went on we realized much more help was needed, so we set a target and committed to follow up with a monetary donation to the Red Cross. Our people serve this region, and they are deeply aware that recovery efforts are far from complete."
